Electronics Manufacturing Services for the Automotive Market

Edit: Maxway Technology Co.,Ltd    Date: May 15, 2017

Electronics are popular in vehicles around us. The brain of the electronic system in a car is considered to be the electronic control unit (ECU), which is a generic term for any embedded system that controls one or more of the electrical system or subsystems in a transport vehicle. They are sometimes referred to as the car's computer. The application can be broadly categorized under powertrain electronics, infotainment electronics, safety electronics, and body electronics among others.

Electronics manufacturing service providers were always described as contract manufacturers who take charge of PCB assembly, production, and testing for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Some EMS have also started to provide design services and design assistance. At Maxway, we provide design for manufacturability (DFM) review, process design, and test design assistances.

Minimum Automotive Quality Management Requirements

1.      Accredited Quality Operation

  • ISO/ TS16949:  is an ISO technical specification aimed at the development of a quality management system that provides for continual improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and the reduction of variation and waste and so far, the only standard recognized worldwide related to quality management in the automotive supply chain.

  • Defect rate on an average for EMS providers falls below 1%. Automotive manufacturers expect zero defect manufacturing and 100% just in time delivery of products. Electronics suppliers are also expected to showcase continuous improvement in all business areas.

2. Quality planning

  • The automotive market, competitive in nature, is characterized by frequent introduction of new products. Hence, to ensure that quality is not compromised, automotive manufacturers require the suppliers to perform quality planning based on Advanced Product Quality Planning and Control Plan (APQP) and Potential Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA).

  • Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) approval is another key requirement which EMS providers have to comply with for automotive manufacturers to use the manufactured products. PPAP is the industry standard for defining the production part approval process to ensure that engineering design record and specification requirements are consistently met.

  • Automotive electronics manufacturers are expected to ensure the availability of the product throughout the customer’s project lifetime.

3. Meeting short delivery timeline

Seasonal change in automotive sales makes it difficult to judge the demand for automotive electronics. This coupled with “just in time manufacturing principle” to put on pressure on EMS to meet the short delivery timeline.

4. Traceability

Traceability for the automotive industry is a process that records and documents the genealogy of the parts and subassemblies associated with a specific vehicle or range of vehicles. At Maxway, we have introduced the Shop Floor Integration system and achieve traceability by scanning and recording each part at in the manufacturing processes to attain traceability.
